Moon King Announce Forthcoming Release of New Album Obsession Out In September

Toronto’s Moon King will be issuing their debut European release on September 16 via Tough Love (Girls Names, Weird Dreams, CYMBALS). Entitled Obsession, the record compiles all of the band’s output to date as well as one previously unreleased track and will be available on LP, CD and digital download.

Comprised of Toronto native Daniel Benjamin and collaborator/co-conspirator, Maddy Wilde, the duo have been making music together for most of their lives. As Moon King, the two singers weave dreamlike harmonies over buzz-saw guitars and electronic percussion, their live performances capturing a raw-nerve intensity that verges on ecstatic.

While they have ties to a handful of other Canadian projects – Majical Cloudz, Grimes, Austra – they more obviously share a sonic affinity with the alien androgyny of Cocteau Twins, mbv and The Breeders. Many of Daniel’s songs appeal to our darker subconscious desires, revelling in the embrace of fear and ego as a means of escape. Daniel also frequently performs with his brother Airick and his group, Doldrums.

Only Child is the first track taken from Obsession and can be heard here.

Obsession is released on 16 September on Tough Love Records.

Metz Release Video for Track, Get Off

Since the October 2012 release of their critically acclaimed debut album, the Toronto-based trio Metz have been touring very nearly non-stop, playing shows across North America and Europe.

And last week Stereogum premiered a new video for album track and previous single Get Off which was directed by fellow Canadian and label mate, Chad VanGaalen. In the words of Stereogum: “It’s gross, nutso Heavy Metal-style animated comic-book surrealism and it tells us of the fate of an alien dolphin-dog creature”.

Metz have announced that they will return to Europe this autumn for a headline tour starting in Luxembourg on November 1 and ending in London, UK on November 28.

Praise for the band comes from both sides of the Atlantic. Pitchfork described the record as, “…29 minutes of pure but artfully rendered chaos,” and the NME have tipped them as revivalists of the scene that Sup Pop created in the early-‘90s. As well as a spread of praise across UK media, the band have also done a BBC Radio 1 live session for Huw Stephens and in March Metz was even the station’s “Record of the Week,” resulting in daytime plays for the band, a rarity in a pop-dominated culture.

Dungeonesse Premiere Video for Nightlight

Dungeonesse, the project of Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes) and Jon Ehrens (White Life) have premiered their new video for Nightlight with Stereogum. In it, director Ariana Natale imagines a liminal space – a dream world full of magical jellyfish that bloom and glow while Nightlight pulses and trembles along. The video works like a one-way mirror into the ambiguous borderland between conciousness and unconciousness, between reminiscing and being haunted, that echoes the song lyrics Wasner sings, “…if I’m in the light, I believe it that I’m over it/ But when it’s late at night, I can feel it taking over and/ I’m not over it, I’m not, I’m not, I’m not.”

Dungeonesse

Of the video, Wasner says: “Nightlight is one of the most bittersweet songs on the record for me. It’s about the kind of heartbreak that finds you even once you think you’ve escaped it–the kind that keeps you up at night, agonizing over those little things you can’t forget.

“I had such a great time working with Ariana and her crew–envisioning the bleary-eyed, sleep-deprived fantasy world that exists in the space between waking and sleeping, where dreams and reality overlap and eventually become one.”

Dungeonesse’s self-titled debut album is out now on Secretly Canadian. The band has already garnered praise from a wide variety of outlets. From mainstream newspapers like USA Today and AM New York, to the visual art world with Art Info, to Pitchfork to The FADER and countless others, Dungeonesse have won hearts and minds with their catchy, compelling music.

Introducing…Virals

Virals is the new project from Shaun Hencher who was previously the frontman of Lovvers.

After playing some US dates including SXSW, NYC and LA and twelve months after playing his debut show, Shaun Hencher AKA Virals returned to the UK recently to play Field Day and the Field Day Pre-party at The Shacklewell Arms last weekend. Now after all that excitement, he is taking some time off to work on a full length album. Watch this space.

Virals

Virals artwork

To celebrate all of this, Virals are making their new song Wax-Work available for free download. You can download it here.

Wax-Work is a blend of 70s power pop and the classic sound of Feeder. With the vocals sung whispering and softly in the background, the grungy guitar riffs and rock drum beat shine through giving it that very Feeder-esque feel.
