Department M Reveal Second Track of Double A-Side Release, The Second Prize/Absentia

Department M have showcased their new single The Second Prize after having recently revealed the other track Absentia that forms the double A-side set for release on June 24 through Too Pure Singles Club.
The Second Prize sees the Leeds group at their cleanest and meanest yet. Funk bass and techno flourishes adorn a skewed but direct vision of hard modern pop music. The track’s aggression is contained but palpable, every warped sound knows its place.

Directed by the group’s drummer Tommy Davidson, the video is a spectre of not-so-long-forgotten 80’s technology and aesthetics, ridden with smashed up cassettes and analogue TVs. The camera focuses on disjointed, almost robotic movements that seem to somehow run so smoothly when accompanied by the band’s accomplished sound and Department M mastermind Owen Brinley’s distinctive bitter-sweet vocals.

“We needed a location to shoot our first music video and winded up trespassing in a dark church basement for four days whilst the congregation worshipped above” explains Brinley. “It went without hitch until the raging church owner caught us about to dismantle a wall of 25 TVs and threatened to call the police.”
Following on from debut I’ll Fax You An Apology, released through Leeds label Hide & Seek records earlier in the year, this new release consolidates the abrasive beauty exhibited and shifts Department M’s sound forward with brutalist pop economy.

Now established as a hypnotic and pummeling live act, the last six months have seen Department M tour the UK with Menace Beach as well as taking in early summer festivals Live at Leeds and YO1. This summer they’ll continue on the road with dates in support of this Too Pure Singles Club release and with festival slots at Beacons and Tramlines.

26 June Leeds A Nation Of Shopkeepers
10 July London Hoxton Bar and Kitchen

18 August Beacons Festival, Skipton

Department M To Release Second Single, Double A-Side The Second Prize/Absentia

Department M will release a second single, double a-side The Second Prize/Absentia through Too Pure on June 24.

Absentia has been released online and can be heard here. Based around a flowing over-driven hip-hop drum loop and smooth swathes of analogue synthesizer, this is a track that uses space as an instrument. Eschewing the taut, tense feel of it’s counterpart, The Second Prize, Absentia has a wide beauty and relief after the tension of the first side. The swooping vocals of “I’m breathing out/I’m breathing in…” and the dramatic drum beat juxtapose the floating noises of the synths. It has a mystical sound that will have you hooked in a second.

Among Brothers – I Am Certain/I Do Not Believe Single Release

Cardiff based chamber pop sextet Among Brothers have released their double A-side single I Am Certain/I Do Not Believe.

Among Brothers unleashed their debut EP Homes back in 2011 through their own label, Barely Regal Records, and have since gained more and more attention in the music scene especially from the likes of BBC Introducing. They followed their debut with single release Keep which was released through Kissability and released digitally through Young & Lost club.

I Am Certain was premiered online a couple of months ago on Soundcloud but the video for the track has just been unveiled and can be watched below. I Am Certain is a full bodied, punchy track with great sing-a-long melodic lyrics such as “Part the skin/touch the blade” and “Pursed your lips/kissed the wound/took the pain into your form”. It’s a track you can instantly fall in love with.

The titles to both songs were drawn from the novel ‘We’ by Zamyatin. With this in mind, the band have embarked upon a ‘concept single’ with a narrative theme running through the lyrics of both songs. Following the story of a boy falling in love with a cult member, the lyrics reveal his descent into her world in order to get closer to her.

‘I Am Certain’/‘I Do Not Believe’ was released physically on the 26 November 2012 through Too Pure Singles Club. The limited edition 7” vinyl will be available on the tour and can also be ordered from the following web sites:

Rough Trade

Jumbo Records

Piccadilly Records

See Among Brothers live on the following dates:

15th Dec London Assembly Hall, Islington (supporting Los Campesinos!)

Among Brothers – I Am Certain

Cardiff based chamber pop sextet, Among Brothers, have set the date of release for their double A-side single I Am Certain/I Do Not Believe. The single is due for release on November 19.

I Am Certain was premiered online last month on Soundcloud. You can listen to the track here.

Among Brothers remind me of a band I’ve recently discovered called Digital Antique. Both bands use orchestral sounds in their music which make the songs sound classical to some extent but not classical in the way you are thinking. Once you’ve had a listen to I Am Certain I’m sure you’ll understand what I mean…

By using orchestral sounds in their music, Among Brothers have produced songs that are much more anthemic and cinematic than other bands. I Am Certain is a full bodied, punchy track with great sing-a-long melodic lyrics such as “Part the skin/touch the blade” and “Pursed your lips/kissed the wound/took the pain into your form”. It’s a track you can instantly fall in love with.

I Am Certain/I Do Not Believe is set for release on November 19 through Too Pure Singles club. You can catch Among Brothers live at the following dates:

10th Nov Bristol Fear Of Fiction Fest
15th Dec London Assembly Hall, Islington (supporting Los Campesinos)
