Smack bang off Bourne Street Brisvegas, the five members of Shag Rock are probably sinking some beers as we speak. But these true blue ‘strayan mates are also set to burst onto the scene as a shagaholic indie-rock sensation, with their latest track Cold Hands.
From the beach to the band room, Shag Rock convert their surfy energy into their music. With a chorus smoother than bundy rum, their new single Cold Hands puts you into a dream state. It’s definitely a slightly more serious turn from the jovial, bubbly tones of their previous EP but a turn for the better.
A thick intensifying guitar build up, a soul-touching piano riff, all augmenting to the chorus that won’t leave your head for weeks. And that’s just after the first listen. Be prepared for the voice of Jeff Buckley and Bernard Fanning’s babies. A hauntingly beautiful song, with a sparse yet perfect fragility that you can only understand once it has hit your ears.
Recorded with QUT as part of the Independent Music Project 2014 and produced by Don Lee and associates, Cold Hands was then mastered by Don Bartley.
Written by lead singer Alex Wilson and guitarist Jacob Reed, it started empty with just an acoustic guitar but with inspiration from their yearning to let every setting sun take them to a place free from daily restrictions, it soon boomed into a thunderous band song.
Brought together in high school through their thirst for good times and a collective buzz off making sweet tunes, these five Brissy boys have life pretty sorted out. Known for their laid back aura yet scintillating stage steeze Shag Rock seem to be capturing everyone’s attention. Jumping off amps, tables, drums. They don’t stand still for a second on stage and this energy is only going to amplify in the future.
Cold Hands is out tomorrow (29 September 2014).
Since releasing his debut album (Some Kind Of Relief) in 2011, James has supported the likes of Xavier Rudd during his Spirit Bird tour, Ash Grunwald and the Boys from The Living End during their Gurgantua tour. In 2014 James released his second record, a five track EP recorded at home by the name of (Boy).
Secret Keeper is the brand new single from James that was recorded in his home studio over the course of a few months.
“It was one of those songs that I just kept coming back to, it came through so simply which made it feel like it was unfinished or missing something. But I have found that some songs work best in their most basic form and Secret Keeper I felt was one of them,” James says of the new single.
Secret Keeper is a song about a close friend of James Abberley’s. One of those people that others always seem to volunteer their deepest secrets and darkest tales to, who is then made to promise that they will never tell another soul for as long as they shall live. And so Secret Keeper was born.
Secret Keeper is a simple folk tune with no intended chorus or song structure, the song builds and evolves much like the secrets that the Secret Keeper holds. One of James’ influences, Laura Marling, uses this same roller coaster type progression in her music, almost as though the song is more of a lifetime recaptured than a traditionally written song. James mellow vocals and honest songwriting is an intriguing and comforting sound which come to a head in his new single, Secret Keeper.

After the best part of two years playing music together in various forms, defining their artistic direction, these three Sydney boys combined their love for blues and rock into a fusion of earthy riffs, pounding rhythms and raw yet soulful vocal melodies. These ingredients blended together are the fabric of the unique sound that is The Desert Sea.
The Sydney three-piece is excited to unveil their latest single Reflection set for release this August.
Shortly after formation, the band released their first single Settle The Score which received airplay on FBi radio as well as community stations across the continent. Armed with the new single, The Desert Sea began playing shows across Australia’s East Coast, honing their live skills while sharing the stage with quality acts like Sticky Fingers, Zeahorse and Jebediah.
Over the next 12 months the band continued to play regular shows while writing new material for their debut EP. With a collective of new songs in hand, The Desert Sea settled in at Oceanic studios on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Owned by Midnight Oil guitarist Jim Moginie, Oceanic Studios proved to be a perfect platform for The Desert Sea’s signature sound. With Ryan Miller on board for production and engineering the boys set to work on recording what would become the Oceanic EP.
Reflection is the first single spawned from the bands debut EP. Kicking off with a chunky blues-rock riff, Reflection’s guitar groove evokes nostalgia of bands like Led Zeppelin and The White Stripes. The drums come next, exploding onto the track with every beat. Then the bass line drops, pounding heavily as it locks in with the guitar to set a relentless foundation for the vocals. A tale of arrogance is told through powerful vocal melodies and provocative lyrics, laying bare the shortcomings of the self absorbed in an attempt to widen their gaze.

Brothers Callaghn and Luke Thomson and close friend James Brewer are set to release their brand new track Let Up this August 2014. The Aussie trio is currently putting the finishing touches on a group of new tracks, of which Let Up is the first taste.
Aussie trio, Lyke Giants
Let Up manages to be punchy and gritty but still maintains a sense of space and smooth movement into a polished package with seamless transitions. All of this provides the perfect backdrop to showcase the earnest and commanding vocals of James. Let Up serves to portray someone in a hopeless situation who is encouraged to stop what is happening and change the outcome for the better.
Much of the band’s existing success has arrived from overseas, charting in college radio and being featured on many blogs worldwide. However home success hasn’t been shortcoming with the trio performing at The Falls Festival and supporting bands such as British India and Faker.
Throughout the production process of Let Up, Lyke Giants had producer Paul Mckercher (Eskimo Joe, Pete Murray, Bertie Blackman, You am I) behind them.
Recorded in Tasmania and mixed and mastered in the US, Let Up is set for global release 4 August 2014.
