Indie Shuffles Premieres Debut Song, Brother Blue, From Best Revenge

After almost 15 years of friendship, guitarist, songwriter and producer Keaton Simons (Gnarls Barkley, Snoop Dogg, Tre Hardson of The Pharcyde) and experimental drummer, songwriter and producer Deantoni Parks (The Mars Volta, Bosnian Rainbows, T-Bone Burnett, John Cale of The Velvet Underground) have finally come together to form their newest project, Best Revenge. Yesterday, Indie Shuffle premiered Brother Blue, the first recorded song from the duo’s project.

Indie Shuffle said: “Brother Blue kicks off with the peculiar menace of a 80s film score. It soon devolves into a sneering rockabilly track, lacerating the listener with both a swaggering guitar and bold, vocal machismo. The lyrics convey wisdom through hurt and Parks’ drums throb with the pulse of reckoning. This is an accessible song with an authentic blues rock mentality. You don’t hear a new track like this often.”

Best Revenge mixes modern and old school sounds for a down-home dirty, raw rock ‘n roll vibe with a modern, technological spin. Keaton sings and plays guitar (including electric and acoustic guitars as well as baritone and fretless) and Deantoni plays drums while he simultaneously live samples Keaton’s voice and plays it on the keyboard through a series of computerised effects – note: there are no loops in Best Revenge. The result is thoughtful music that excites and feels damn good. With a massive sound coming from just the two artists, this new project calls upon the adage “seeing is believing.”

Deemed “a triple threat” by his hometown’s Los Angeles Times, Keaton Simons has been captivating audiences for years with his raw, gritty voice, soul-baring songwriting and incomparable, sought-after electric and acoustic guitar work. He’s been brought on as a guitarist, as well as bassist, singer, writer and musical director for such notable acts as Gnarls Barkley, Snoop Dogg, and Tre Hardsonof The Pharcyde. With his own solo project, Keaton has co-produced and released records on major labels, licensed hundreds of songs for TV and film, toured nationally and internationally and performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Last Call with Carson Daly.

Hailing form Newnan, Georgia, Deantoni Parks is a new wave/avant-garde experimental drummer, songwriter, actor and record producer. He has written, toured and collaborated with T-Bone Burnett, Bosnian Rainbows, The Mars Volta, Meshell Ndegeocello, John Cale of The Velvet Underground, Yoko Ono, Moby, Basement Jaxx and Cody Chesnutt. Additionally, Deantoni wrote and played drums for the Grand Theft Auto 5 original soundtrack and is co-founder of Dark Angels alongside producer and keyboardist Nicci Kasper, as well as a member of KUDU.

After meeting almost 15 years ago through jazz/funk trio Soulive, Keaton Simons and Deantoni Parks have not only been close friends but true admirers of each other’s respective work. Best Revenge is the first of what they hope will be many collaborative projects. Fans will have the opportunity to catch them live in Austin, Texas this week at SXSW.

Introducing…Cheers Elephant

Since stirring up buzz at last year’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, the rock quartet Cheers Elephant moved from Philadelphia to Los Angeles and connected with an influential management company. Now they have a lyric video for their song Peoples which premiered yesterday on Speakeasy.

The song has a hazy ’60s pop feel full of handclaps, jangling guitar and sunny vocal harmonies. The video features footage compiled from a week long tour of the northeast last year that included stops at ConserFest on Block Island, R.I., and rural Maine, where Cheers Elephant played a DIY festival with other bands from Philadelphia.

Peoples opened the band’s self-released 2012 LP Like Wind Blows Fire. Cheers Elephant is currently working on a follow-up—and returning to SXSW where the band has lined up a grueling schedule: they’re slated to play 12 sets in five day.

Wounds Release New Video For Dead Road Via Alternative Press

Dublin’s heavy rock music quartet, Wounds, have released a new video for their exhilarating track, Dead Road. The explosive and passionate track, which features Ian D’Sa of Billy Talent fame, transcends their heavy sound into a radio-ready, modern day hit.  The band, who released their debut album Die Young late last year, are set to take on SXSW with multiple not-to-miss performances in Austin, Texas.

Not many bands have been through as much as Wounds in the last two years. From the highs of rave reviews for their debut EP and debut album to the lows and grief of a near death experience that almost took the life of one of their members in a horrific four story fall, Wounds are careening their way to the top with an incredible debut album that has been described as one “…of the most intense debut albums of the year.” (Kerrang!) Wounds are currently featured  in Alternative Press‘ 100 Bands You Need To Know This Year.

“This is the first song I ever had the guts to sing, and it’ll be the last song I’ll ever sing,” says frontman Aiden Coogan. “I think the world will see the emotion attached in the video and the regret and pain of never telling you loved someone while they were still around. It’s a pretty literal song but it’s reality and the one certainty in life is death and I find that fascinating.”

With multiple international tours under their belts and after making a huge splash in Europe, Wounds will take on SXSW for the first time this year.

The Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger Added To SXSW Showcase

Brooklyn labels Northern Spy and Ba Da Bing are teaming up on an official SXSW showcase on Friday March 14 at Palm Door on Sabine St. Newly announced on the line-up is Sean Lennon’s Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger who release their new album, Midnight Sun, on April 29 on Chimera Music.

The Ba Da Bing and Northern Spy Showcase features a new generation of musicians emerging as the genre defining artists of psych, avant garde and experimental. No showcase can boast such an eclectic group of artists, for each band is singular in their approach and belong to a genre unto themselves. Oscillate to the dark-folk drone of Cross Record, trip balls to the psyched out grooves of Cloud Becomes Your Hand and NYMPH, get a pit started during the chaotic early grunge of Slothrust and shake your friggin ass to the saxophone pop of DVA. They’ve got it all and they’ll be partying indoors and on their backyard deck.

Check out Ba Da Bing and Northern Spy bands speak about their SXSW dreams in the showcase trailer below:

Slothrust Announce SXSW Tour And Reveal New Track, 7.30AM

On March 3, Slothrust will embark on their album release tour as they make their way to SXSW. Along the way, they’ll share the stage with Perfect Pussy and fellow Brooklynites, Fletcher C. Johnson and Hector’s Pets. The band will be making their official SXSW appearance at the Ba Da Bing & Northern Spy’s Official Showcase at The Palm Door with Cloud Becomes Your Hand. Before leaving Austin they’ll play the Impose Magazine, She Shreds Magazine and Rethink Pop showcases with Big Ups, Future Islands, White Mystery and Potty Mouth. Then, the trio will bring their early-grunge-infused rock throughout the Midwest on the way home.

On top of this exciting news, Slothrust have also recently revealed their second single, 7:30 AM, from their newly released full-length, Of Course You Do. Their first single Crockpot spoke of alienation and exploring fears but 7:30 AM puts all those feelings in a bag and tosses them away. They are taking a stand, they are bold, they are proud and they are loud. 7:30 AM oscillates between deceptively sweet twanging guitar and over-driven, punch-you-in-the-face ‘tude.

The music video for 7:30 AM was released in collaboration with Laurel Parmet last spring in preparation for their new album. If you’re curious to find out more about this band’s personality, check out the video. They wouldn’t make the best house guests.
