Son Lux Releases New Video For Alternate World

After a triumphant European tour, including an intense sold out show at The Lexington in London, and with a wobbly YouTube video of Lorde covering his last single, Easy, doing the rounds, Son Lux has revealed more plans for this year plus a hard-hitting new video for Alternate World.

Alternate World is the opening track of Son Lux’s new record Lanterns, out now on Joyful Noise Recordings. The video shows a prickly and haunting story worthy of the power Son Lux captures within the track.

Ryan Lott, AKA Son Lux, explains: “The past is a type of reality that haunts the present and the film’s story and imagery evokes this feeling beautifully.”

Directors Truman & Cooper add: “The film was shot last December in Normandy. We really wanted to situate the story in a moody, bleak and hazy environment. We love the off season atmosphere over there, its really melancholic. We think that watching the couple wander in this environment would reinforce the feeling of loneliness”.

In addition to Son Lux’s previously announced headline show at London’s XOYO on May 21 and performance at Latitude Festival, a number of regional dates have now been added.

Son Lux has also recently reignited his work with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti under the name SISYPHUS (previously called s / s / s), more information here.

Son Lux Reveals Return To UK For XOYO Show And Unveils New Remix Of Single, Easy

Following high praise for his mind-boggling new album Lanterns, released late last year through Joyful Noise Recordings, Son Lux brings his intricate and mesmerising live show to Europe as of this week.

With most of the shows, including The Lexington in London on January 23, now sold out, Son Lux has confirmed a return to the capital for a show at XOYO on May 21. Click here for tickets.

Last week a new wintery remix of Easy, one of the album highlights, was posted online. You can listen to it here.

The remix is by elusive French producer Arandel who explained: “We liked the original version for its very creative arrangements, its complex and smart polyrhythmic figures and its weird, sparky yet unidentified sounds. Basically, we just tried to slow it down a bit and find a different groove to it.”

Equal parts producer and composer, Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) bridges an unusual gap between old-world music discipline and next-level experimentation.

Meditative but heaving with energy, Lanterns finds a peculiar congruency between futuristic soul and ancient sentiment. Driving orchestral pop (Lost It To Trying, No Crimes) is placed alongside haunting minimalism (Pyre, Enough Of Our Machines), often starkly juxtaposing densely layered arrangements with Lott’s intimate voice.

His third full-length album, and his first for Joyful Noise Recordings, positions Son Lux at the helm of an impressive ensemble of instrumentalists and singers including Chris Thile (The Punch Brothers), Peter Silberman (The Antlers), DM Stith, Lily & Madeleine, Darren King (Mutemath), Ieva Berberian (Gem Club) and yMusic (Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver).

Son Lux will tour Lanterns across Europe this month. All tour dates will feature a full band backing Ryan Lott (aka Son Lux) with drummer Ian Chang (Landlady, Matthew Dear, People Get Ready) and guitarist Rafiq Bhatia (“the most promising improvisers in the United States today” – New York Times).

Son Lux has also recently reignited his work with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti under the name SISYPHUS (previously called s / s / s). You can find more information here.

Son Lux Reveals Video For Album Track, Pyre

Son Lux has revealed a beautiful new video for album standout track Pyre. The song is taken from his album Lanterns which received a multitude of praise when it was released earlier this year through Joyful Noise Recordings. Son Lux will embark on a European tour throughout January including two UK shows.

Directed by The Craig Brothers and featuring Son Lux and dancer Bennyroyce Royon, the video magically mirrors Ryan Lott’s explosive sound with layers of paint appearing on bare human bodies. The video is beautifully shot helping to highlight the simplicity yet intensity that this song has.

Son Lux Releases New Video For Lost It To Trying

With his new album Lanterns released last week, Joyful Noise Recordings’ Son Lux has released a music video for the engaging new single, Lost It To Trying.

The music video which was directed, choreographed and edited by Jennifer McQuiston Lott explores human interaction through the mediation of dance focusing on two individuals. The video accompanies Lost It To Trying beautifully with the greyscale colours contrasting the colourful spectrum of the track itself.

The video compliments Son Luxs’ creation due to the editing, animation and visual effects by Anthony Ciannamea which screams to outer space. The light, small floating circles and planet like sphere that displays the dancing figures produces a space theme, a term that could easily be used to describe the single Lost It To Trying.

On the back of the release of Lanterns, Lost It To Trying and the new music video, Son Lux AKA Ryan Lott is set to go on tour in January 2014. Son Lux’s European January tour commences on the 14 in Berlin and concludes in Copenhagen on the 31. With his UK fan base growing, tickets are selling fast, however there are some still available for the show in London at the Lexington on 23 January 2014.

Tour dates below:
14 Berlin Bi Nuu
15 Cologne Arttheatre
16 St Gallen Palace
17 Luxembourg Rotonde
18 Brussels AB Club
19 Rotterdam Rotown
21 Nijmegen Merleyn

Son Lux Releases Remix Of Recent Single, Easy

With his new album, Lanterns, to be released on October 29, Son Lux shares a hip-hop reworking of his recent single, Easy which features LA rapper and producer Busdriver.

Previous single, Lost It To Trying, previously reviewed on Rocking Republic, seemed ‘…possibly too experimental for some’. Easy shows more form and control in structure. It has a haunting appeal. The original version of Easy can be downloaded from Soundcloud.

This dark, futuristic soul track lends itself with striking brilliance to what might sound like an incompatible collaboration. Busdriver has created not just a remix but an entirely different vision. In fact, it’s really impressive with rap and trance actually making sense.

Recently noted both for his s/s/s project with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti and for being named NPR’s “Best New Artist of the Year”, Son Lux can be hit and miss but he has definitely got something going on.

In addition to CD and Digital, Joyful Noise Recordings are releasing 500 copies of a ‘colour in colour’ vinyl edition of Lanterns as well as 1200 copies of a ‘split colour’ vinyl edition. Each copy is hand numbered accompanied by a thumb print of Son Lux himself.

Lanterns will be released on October 29.

Son Lux Gives Away Free Download Of New Track, Easy

On 29 October, New York’s Son Lux, from Joyful Noise Recordings, is set to release his third studio album titled Lanterns. To celebrate this news, Son Lux is giving away his latest track, Easy, as a free download from Soundcloud.

Son Lux

Son Lux aka Ryan Lott

Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) is most known for his musical project with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti, S/S/S, which lead him to win the NPR award Best New Artist of the Year. The new record is on track to be nine songs long and contains many contributions from other musicians from bands such as The Punch Brothers, The Antlers, Dirty Projectors and Bon Iver.

Along with Son Lux, these artists are indulging in what can only be described as experimental post-rock alternative hip hop electro fusion. Lanterns will include the single Easy with its eerie introduction and echoing electro samples that leave the audience pressing play, over and over again. Lanterns will also include the unique Lost it to Trying, a sprint of tight musical brilliance which makes anyone want to live out their day in double speed. Joyful Noise Recordings are releasing 500 copies of a ‘colour in colour’ vinyl edition of Lanterns as well as 1200 copies of a ‘split colour’ vinyl edition. Each copy is hand numbered accompanied by a thumb print of Son Lux himself. Get pre-ordering now.

Son Lux Unveils New Track, Lost It To Trying

Following on from last year’s collaboration with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti as s/s/s, Son Lux will release his third full-length album Lanterns on 29 October via Joyful Noise Recordings.

Equal parts producer and composer, Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) bridges an unusual gap between old-world music discipline and next-level experimentation.

Son Lux

Son Lux promo shot

Pitchfork described the new track Lost It To Trying from Son Lux as: “…a loose rock song of sorts filled with compelling spare parts– synths that scree high like seagulls, a fidgeting horn section and some chattering flutes; a exchange between a dexterous live drummer and some drum programming. The choral singing is reminiscent of Sufjan but the sound– brainy and muscular, propulsive and complicated, mournful and celebratory– is all Lott’s own.”

Meditative but heaving with energy, Son Lux’s Lanterns finds a peculiar congruency between futuristic soul and ancient sentiment. Driving orchestral pop is placed alongside haunting minimalism, often starkly juxtaposing densely layered arrangements with Lott’s intimate voice. However, Son Lux’s style could still prove too experimental for some – it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

Son Lux’s third full-length album is his first release via Joyful Noise Recordings. Lanterns positions Son Lux at the helm of an impressive ensemble of instrumentalists and singers including Chris Thile (The Punch Brothers), Peter Silberman (The Antlers), DM Stith, Lily & Madeleine, Darren King (Mutemath), Ieva Berberian (Gem Club) and yMusic (Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver).

Son Lux will celebrate the release of Lanterns on 4 November 2013 at Joe’s Pub in Manhattan, NY.

Lanterns will be available to buy from 29 October.
