Sinkane Acts As Musical Director And Producer For William Onyeabor Tribute Shows

City Slang recording artist Sinkane will be performing and directing a special set of classic jams by 1970s Nigerian synth pioneer, William Onyeabor, starting with The Barbican in London on 1 April 2014.

The core band for these tribute shows is Sinkane’s live band (Ahmed Gallab, jaytram, Ish Montgomery and Jonny Lam) with Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem), Money Mark (Beastie Boys) and legendary Nigerian funk singers, The Lijadu Sisters, who will also be performing some of their classic material backed by Sinkane. This band will be joined in the UK by Damon Albarn, Ghost Poet, Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Kele Okereke (Bloc Party) and others. The US shows will feature David Bryne, Alexis Taylor, Tunde Adebimpe, Luke Jenner, Joshua Redman and others.

“It has been an honour to work with some of my heroes”, Gallab explains. “William Onyeabor’s music helped shape the sound of Sinkane as have the musicians involved. Jason Trammell, Ish Montgomery, Jonny Lam, Pat Mahoney, Money Mark and I have become a family. This is a dream come true.”

Sinkane, who has earned musical stripes playing with the likes of Eleanor Friedberger, Of Montreal & Caribou, released his exceptional and unique debut album, Mars, last year to great applause. Mars saw Sinkane seamlessly blend deep, polyrhythmic grooves that refer as much to early 70’s underground soul as back to Sudan, Gallab’s home country, into a 21st century party record that acknowledges the international musical village in which we all now live.

His work on the William Onyeabor shows sees Gallab taking a break from creating the follow up to Mars which we can expect to hear in the not too distant future.

Gallab said: “I want to create universal music. A sound and feeling that everyone can enjoy because they can relate to the sounds and words. I feel like I’ve come close to creating that music on this next record.”

Sinkane to Release Deluxe Edition of Mars

Ahead of a busy festival season, Sinkane have announced a deluxe edition of their remarkable album Mars following its success last November. The new edition is out on June 21 through City Slang and includes a variety of remixes.

When Sinkane released the critically acclaimed Mars, one of the original ideas was to take this work to another dimension and find a remix for each song. This was inspired in part by the stellar mix done by Ahmed’s friend Dan Snaith, aka Daphni (Caribou). Before they knew it, the band were swimming in new sounds, jaw-dropping mixes by Monkeytown flagships P.hono and Benjamin Damage, west coast dub-vibes from Sun Araws Duppy Gun project, psychedlic acid treatment by Africaine 808, retro futuristic house filter from Ostgut heroes Barker and Baumecker and much, much more.

There were so many remixes in fact, that the band decided to put it all together as a special edition. Mars (Deluxe Edition) comes complete with 15 remixes in total, plus the original album. For the first time this edition collects all available remixes as well as six new and unreleased remixes by Helado Negro, Kissey, LBC Soundsystem, Dungeonesse (aka: Jen Wasner from Wye Oak and Jon Ehrens) and DFA studio friends Tippy Toes.

One of the brand new remixes from the forthcoming release has been revealed today. Swedish producer Kissey transforms the already incredible track Lady C’mon and takes it to a whole new level with intoxicating house-beats and sci-fi sounds. You can hear the Kissey remix of Lady C’mon here.

SINKANE Reveals Video for New Track Warm Spell

After his recent appearance with Usher on stage at SXSW and short visit to the UK where he performed at Hoxton Bar & Kitchen a few weeks back, SINKANE has now revealed the video for new track, Warm Spell.

Sinkane Warm Spell video

Screen shot from Warm Spell video

The beautifully shot clip accompanying Warm Spell features a man as he appears in an alternate reality inhabited by foreign terrain and populated by sirens. He attempts to avoid the sirens’ spell but ultimately fails and he submits to his primal desires and fantasies. Only when he finally submits, is he ultimately able to decode the strange world that surrounds him.

Director Philip Di Fiore and Director Christopher J. Lytwyn photographed everyday fruits, vegetables and flowers with a macro lens in order to create the identity and terrain of the universe in the video. It’s a truely artistic video for a track that fully deserves it. Warm Spell begins as an experimental jazz piece before it settles into an easy to listen to track full of meditative vocals, jazz drum beats and wonderful summery guitar riffs.

SINKANE’s debut album Mars was released last year through City Slang.

Sinkane Returns to UK for Headline Show

Following the release of Sinkane’s debut album at the end of last year, Ahmed Gallab has now returned to the UK for a headline show, Rough Trade East performance and a DJ set.

Ahmed Gallab has made a mini-documentary to tell his fans what to expect from these shows. The video can be viewed below.

The shows come in the wake of a fantastic trip to SXSW this year when Gallab was invited by the Afghan Whigs to join them and Usher on stage to perform SINKANE single Runnin. You can watch the clip from SXSW below.

Gallab is known in musician circles for having been the touring multi-instrumentalist for Of Montreal, Caribou, Born Ruffians and Eleanor Friedberger but he didn’t start there. Gallab’s family left Sudan when he was a boy, immigrated to the US and moved all over the country. He went to high school in Kent, Ohio. There, he found his first musical community in the town’s unsung but thriving post-hardcore scene.
