Saintseneca’s New Album, Dark Arc, Is Out Now

The new Saintseneca album, Dark Arc, is now in stores after receiving much early acclaim from critics and fans alike. Combining the raw acoustic instrumentation of singer-songwriter Zac Little’s rural Appalachian background with atmospheric production and post-punk energy, the band’s tuneful, poetic songs soar higher than ever before. A string of performances at SXSW generated a genuine buzz with influential station KCRW writing of the band “getting the crowd riled up” and “making a great first impression,” and culminating with a profile of Zac Little in Esquire Magazine.

This week front man Little was interviewed on the national NPR show Weekend Edition. Host Rachel Martin begins the segment by proclaiming “This is not your grandpa’s Appalachia” before exploring the band’s distinctive DIY roots and penchant for merging dark themes with uplifting pop structures.

The first single from Dark Arc – a beautifully uplifting melancholic track entitled Happy Alone has already been added by influential radio stations WXPN in Philadelphia, WFUV in NYC, KUTX in Austin and Sirius XM’s The Loft and others. Early reviews have absolutely raved about this emerging band, Rolling Stone calling Dark Arc a “gem” and the Seattle Weekly writing that Saintseneca is “a delight to listen to, riding the edge between old weird Appalachian Americana and melodic indie pop.” Pitchfork proclaims that “Zac Little writes stompy folk songs that are more artfully crafted than all the bands you probably just thought of when you read the words “stompy folk songs.”

Saintseneca Premiere New Video For Happy Alone

AVClub.com is premiering a new video from the celebrated young band, Saintseneca. The clip is an imaginative study of alienation and isolation for the song Happy Alone from the the band’s forthcoming album Dark Arc in stores April 1.

Saintseneca is led by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Zac Little who originally hails from rural Appalachia. Following in the footsteps of heartland bands who have sought to twist the music of the old weird America into new shapes – from the Violent Femmes to Neutral Milk Hotel – Saintseneca perform songs that sound both familiar and uniquely original. The group utilises a wide range of acoustic instrumentation with more contemporary elements such as synthesisers and electric guitars to create a seamless blend of soaring vocals and vibrant post-punk energy.

Songwriter Little says of the song Happy Alone: “This is a love song, a meditation on doom, the joy and the transcendence in all of that. I found the song in a bass that was half melted from the time when my bedroom had burned down. I didn’t even know the bass worked but kept it anyway. One day I could feel the gravity coming from it, pulling on me. I plugged it into this raspy little amp and found all of these little songs with it, bouncing around in the reverb tank. There is joy in doom and doom in joy.”

The band will be touring the US in support of Dark Arc beginning in March.

You can catch them live on the following dates:

The band Saintseneca have debuted a video for their song Visions via Stereogum. The track is from the young band’s recent digital EP which Time Out Chicago described as,“…anchored by soaring choruses that seem tailor-made for a good, old-fashioned shout-along” and Pitchfork.com wrote, “When the instruments fade out and Little howls, it’s more of a gut punch than an uppercut.” The band’s anticipated full length album Dark Arc will arrive in stores April 1 2014.

Saintseneca Singled Out As One Of Rolling Stone’s Top 10 Best Discoveries

Saintseneca delivered a stand-out performance at CMJ in New York last week. Rolling Stone singled out the band as one of their 10 Best Discoveries writing: “Rocking a monk’s tonsure and antebellum moustache, in a dark vest, shirt and slacks, frontman Zac Little represented like an introverted backwoods preacher under Cake Shop’s low basement ceiling, singing about acid rain and dying young in a cracking, nasal tone that was addictively tart. Huddled around two mics, his bandmates (notably key foil Maryn Jones) delivered hollered harmonies that felt more like collective bloodletting than sing-along-shilling bonhomie, and more potent for it”.

The video below features Saintseneca performing their latest single, Uppercutter, for Bad Racket. It shows the band’s singer-songwriter Zac Little talking about the inspiration for Uppercutter followed by the breath-taking performance from the band. It is charming, fresh and holds your attention despite the simplicity of visuals. There’s a huge catchiness built in to the chorus of Uppercutter and the line “Swallow all your chewing gum/And limp into the setting sun/I for one will not be sung to sleep” is indicative of their quirky talent.

The band’s full length album Dark Arc arrives in stores April 1 2014. Keep checking the site for more treasures.
