Introducing…Tallows

Bringing a new spirit to indie music with their refreshing combination of unique vocals, rolling melodies and crisp horns and percussion, experimental indie band Tallows brings a distinctive mood to the genre.

Tallows

Tallows

Known for their “…kaleidoscopic songs that quickly turn anthemic” (Paste Magazine) and already hailed by tastemaking music blogs (including DIY Magazine and The Wild Honey Pie) as the new indie band to watch, Tallows began when friends Josh Hogsett (multi-instrumentalist/vocalist) and Richard Lindsey (guitarist/programmer) met and formed the band in Oklahoma City in 2012. With the addition of Jay Sullivan (drummer) and Adam Thornbrugh (bassist), the band recorded their first album Memory Marrow, released in 2013. Quickly winning listeners over with their eclectic songwriting, infectious singles Soft Water and Small Talk and dynamic performances, Memory Marrow was nominated for best indie/alt album by Independent Music Awards.

With the  release of new single Sea Bitch, the band continues reshaping organic and electronic sounds into a dynamic structure, giving them a unique and original sound that is comparable to Foals and Local Natives but unlike any other. The band is currently working on their next full-length, set to be released in mid-2015.

Introducing…Ex Hex

Ex Hex, the new project from Helium & Wild Flag vocalist Mary Timony, will release their highly anticipated full-length debut Rips on October 7 in North America and October 13 worldwide. They have also announced a full list of US tour dates.

Ex Hex is Mary Timony, Laura Harris and Betsy Wright. They are a power trio hailing from Washington, DC, making the music you’ve been waiting for. Drums, bass, guitar, P90s, searing leads—this is unapologetic rock ‘n’ roll spat out in the discipline’s mother tongue.

Ex Hex

Ex Hex

Mary found Laura Harris (The Aquarium, Benjy Ferree) and they hit it off immediately. Laura is a monster on drums: intuitive, solid and just a bit rough around the edges. The pair played together for a couple of months in a tiny carpet-lined practice space shared with half a dozen hardcore bands and what appeared to be the better part of a B.C. Rich Mockingbird.

In walked Betsy Wright from the wilds of Virginia. She and Mary have similar tendencies, both defaulting to denim and The Voidoids. Betsy is a performer and an ace piano player, and before long, she was slinging a cherry SG as the third member of Ex Hex.

The group played a handful of shows and a couple of months later, in the spring of 2014, headed into the studio. Working furiously, they recorded over the span of two weeks in North Carolina with Mitch Easter (Let’s Active) and in the basement of Mary’s home with frequent collaborator Jonah Takagi. Bobby Harlow (The Go, Conspiracy of Owls) was tapped to mix because of his unique take on making rock records.

What results is Ex Hex – Rips, twelve songs about underdogs, guys stealing your wallet, schoolyard brawls and getting bent. The record happens pretty quickly so don’t blink.

You can pre-order Rips now at iTunes (pre-orders will receive an instant download of Don’t Wanna Lose) and in the Merge store. Ex Hex have also revealed their latest track, Beast.

Introducing…Foxsmith

Foxsmith have recently revealed their latest single, Pentimento.

Foxsmith

Foxsmith

Recorded and mixed by producer Yanto Browning (The Medics, Tara Simmons, The Jungle Giants), this second offering from the four-piece is laden with lush melodies, beginning quite intimately before snapping into catchy guitar and synth hooks. Stirring yet comforting, Pentimento explores existentialism and follows the bands new direction into darker, shimmering soundscapes and grooves.

The track is a greatly anticipated follow up to their first single Wake Up which was well-received, gaining airplay on local and online radio stations including Triple J Unearthed, 3RRR and 4ZZZ, where it was added to rotation and remained in 4ZZZ’s Top 10 for over a month in December/January. The video clip for Wake Up was premiered online through Groupie Magazine and featured on local and international music blogs including Mess+Noise, City & Sound and Ground Sound LA to name a few.

Accompanying their new track is an animation by local Brisbane artist Seana Seeto who takes the viewer through many worlds following the journey of a blob-shaped protagonist, a harbinger of mishaps. For the release of this new single and animation clip, Foxsmith are hosting a collaborative arts event featuring local Brisbane bands and an artshow on Saturday 16 August at The Zoo in Brisbane.

Introducing…Eliot Sumner

Eliot Sumner

Eliot Sumner

Eliot Sumner has revealed the second song entitled Come Friday from her upcoming EP, Information, which will be released August 5.

Information, the first taste of the full length album that’s due out next year, comes from a renewed sense of focus and clarity and bears electronic hallmarks with some surprising influences including Sumner’s favourite band as a teenager, The Bad Seeds.

After releasing The Constant in 2010 under the moniker I Blame Coco, Eliot toured for two years, playing headlining shows and festivals all over the world. Since then, she’s experimented with different writing methods – and even spent time working with Clint Mansell on a film score – and took time to simply grow. She says: “It’s now or never. I’m proud of the music I’m making and it’s time to take ownership by putting my real name on it.”

Weezer Announce New Album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End

Los Angeles, CA’s Weezer will release their highly anticipated ninth album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, on September 30 2014 on Republic Records. Produced by Ric Ocasek, who previously helmed production on the band’s first and third records (The Blue Album and The Green Album), Everything Will Be Alright In The End is the band’s first collection of new material in four years.

Weezer new album

Weezer’s album artwork

Since forming in 1992, Weezer has released a myriad of celebrated, chart-topping albums, selling over 13 million records worldwide. Following an intensely prolific couple years at the end of the aughts, the band chose to deliberately dial down the tempo in 2010, a move singer/guitarist Rivers Cuomo says allowed him to write at a slower pace, giving the songs he wanted to use for an album the time to gradually grow into their final forms. He started almost every song on the piano, eventually transferring them to the guitar before taking them to the band. When it came time to record the material, Weezer reunited with the man who helped them make some of their most iconic album-length work, Cars frontman Ric Ocasek. The resulting album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, is a stand-out gem in Weezer’s vast and varied catalogue, a reflection of a much-loved band at their very best. Organised thematically around three groups of songs, it is an album that utilises that sound from the band’s earliest days to tell new stories in 2014, creating some of the finest, most heartfelt songs Weezer has ever recorded.

Weezer have revealed the first track from the record, Back To The Shack, which can be heard here.
