Whilk & Misky Release Video For Clap Your Hands And Announce Their Second Single, Darkhands

Welcome to the hazy world of London’s Nima and Charlie AKA Whilk & Misky.

Nima likes cold industrial techno whilst Charlie likes angst infused soul which places them in a mystical highway somewhere between Chet Faker and Flume.

From a chance meeting at a restaurant where Charlie was working to posting demos online to finally causing a budding war between a gaggle of labels – the duo have just glazed the finishing touches over the debut EP, The First Sip.

Following their Next Hype kudos from Zane Lowe for their debut single Clap Your Hands and the release of its sublime Miami-backlit video last week, Whilk & Miksy have now revealed the next track from the EP – the stripped back deep-electronica slab that is Darklands. The track first surfaced online last year as a demo and now the final edit can be heard for the first time.

Sinkane To Release New Album, Mean Love, In September

Sinkane has announced his new album Mean Love for release on City Slang on September 1 2014 and has revealed the first two tracks, Hold Tight and How We Be. He’s also confirmed a string of European live shows for September.

Melodically beat-driven and meditatively lyrical, Sinkane’s Mean Love rolls like an emotional, existential history of the artist. Ahmed Gallab has created an altogether unique compound of sound, stylistically nostalgic and ultramodern at the same time.

From Gallab’s childhood in Sudan there is a Pan-African influence of popular Sudanese music and haqibah as well as distinct horn and synth arrangements more common to East Africa. This background merges with the lessons learned from Ahmed‘s stints with obsessive craftsmen such as Caribou, Yeasayer and Of Montreal and especially the monumental task he underwent as musical director of ATOMIC BOMB! The Music of William Onyeabor.

Gallab excavated and arranged a treasure trove of lost classics from the West African synth-pioneer to put together a now legendary series of performances. Alongside his band-mates in Sinkane (jaytram on drums, Ish Montgomery on bass, Jonny Lam on guitar), he also brought on guests Damon Albarn, David Byrne, The Lijadu Sisters, Money Mark and members of Hot Chip, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture and Blood Orange.

The experiences from this on-going endeavor contribute to the collective feel of the record and attest to his uncanny ability to embrace and assemble a huge history as pure and generous modern-musical expressions. Employing the architecture of pop and a forward-thinking approach to its classic instrumentation, the vibes of Sinkane’s deep-groove past remain intact, in full force. There are doses of West African funk slow-burners, a noir blaxploitation cool and a more afro-centric Curtis Mayfield is present, specifically in album standout Hold Tight. A surprising country soul rising is detectable in the title track, Mean Love, and also in the hauntingly beautiful slide guitar work of Galley Boys a la such soul heavyweights as James Carr and Solomun Burke.

You can catch Sinkane live on the following dates:

Introducing…Shammi Pithia

Cosmic is the record Shammi Pithia has always wanted to make. Taking all of his experience as a composer, producer and performer, Shammi has created a breathtakingly graceful yet energising album full of beauty, intricacy and emotion.

After fourteen months of composition and studio work, collaborations with Sonna Rele, Sabiyha, Jatanil Banerjee and Ambika Jois, and recordings of an array of instruments including Bansuri (bamboo flute) and a nine-piece string ensemble, Shammi has produced an LP worthy of his prominence as a trailblazer in contemporary world music.

Produced and mixed by Shammi, and mastered at Metropolis by Andy ‘Hippy’ Baldwin, Cosmic is a celebration of life from the Big Bang to the present. It takes the listener on a journey through space time, delivering a rich sound soaked in feeling, passion and excitement, all intertwined in a gritty and heavy sonic.

To be released on 21 July 2014 as a digital-only release (a CD release of the album is to come later in the year), Cosmic will be distributed by Believe Digital and will be available on iTunes, Amazon and all other leading digital download stores.

Building on his reputation for creating powerful and resonant music, and with notable praise from leading musicians including Nitin Sawhney and legendary Indian classical flautist Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shammi has crafted an album of delightful elegance.

Shammi Pithia is building a solid name for himself in the world of world-electronica as a creative composer and producer walking in the shadows of great artists such as Nitin Sawhney and Talvin Singh, who have both praised Shammi and his music.

Over the past five years, Shammi has enjoyed support from both UK and international media, growing him a truly global fanbase. For his work Shammi has been recognised by the BBC on a number of occasions; the first single to be taken from Cosmic has already been added to BBC Asian Network’s playlist. Shammi has also received a string of outstanding reviews from leading magazines and websites including Songlines and MTV Desi. World Music Central reviewed Audio Descriptive as “…an extraordinary debut album of South Asian hybrids by one of the rising stars of British global electronica”.

Enjoying the busiest time in his career so far, Shammi has worked on several projects including a remix for Nitin Sawhney that was released on his album The Last Days of Meaning. On top of studio work Shammi has been performing constantly with notable performances at Glastonbury Festival, a headline show at The Purcell Room at London’s Southbank Center and a headline show at the The Symbiosis of Sound curated by Talvin Singh at Kings Place.

With a much-noted talent for his arrangement and ability to lead Shammi was called upon last year to be musical director for one of the main events at London Southbank Centre’s Alchemy Festival for Bollywood stars Ash King and Harshdeep Kaur. Selling out a thousand seats and writing for and leading a band of eighteen musicians Shammi has established himself as a musician with many skills to offer.

Shammi’s second LP Cosmic is set to further establish his status as a leader in his field. This is Comic – “Creation Of Something Meaningful Inside Chaos”.

Introducing Lupa, a 16-year-old indie electronica singer-songwriter from Sydney otherwise known as Imogen Jones.

A classically trained musician, Lupa comes to the indie scene with a fresh take on electronic production. Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of artists, from Grimes to Laura Marling and Radiohead, she integrates her skills as a violinist with synthesised instrumentation and delicate vocal layering to create a unique, alluring sound.

Proving herself an intuitively gifted songwriter and musician Lupa writes, records and produces each of her tracks entirely independently, delivering beautifully textured electronic pop that has a lyrical maturity far beyond her years. Her debut single Statues is a direct, poetic and musically sophisticated window into the heart of today’s teenage girl; an unsettling and unforgettable listen.

Statues is out now available online and through iTunes with an undoubtedly impressive EP set to follow in the coming months.
