Wye Oak Reveal New Track The Tower And Details Of New Album Release

The Baltimore two-piece Wye Oak (Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack) will release their fourth full-length studio album Shriek this 28 April on City Slang.

On Tuesday, BBC 6Music’s Lauren Laverne unveiled the first track The Tower on her show and the band have now made the song available to listen to and share.

Following extensive touring in support of their critically acclaimed 2011 release Civilian which – for the UK – culminated in two performances at The National’s ATP and a Scala headline show in December 2012, Wye Oak members Jenn and Andy found themselves apart for the first time. Andy had recently moved to the west coast, leaving their hometown of Baltimore.

Simultaneously but separately, the two began exploring new ways of writing. Jenn, having picked up the bass did not begin with her typical guitar and likewise Andy began to explore different ways of layering keyboards. Both worked with other people and Jenn explored other moods under the titles Dungeonesse and Flock of Dimes.

The freedom of these new methods allowed for a new found emotional immediacy and in spite of, or perhaps because of the distance, Wye Oak have recorded their most personal album yet.

Shriek was a co-production between Wye Oak and Nicolas Vernhes of the Rare Book Room in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Vernhes also engineered and mixed the album. His inventive production work complimented the band’s new direction, helping them to create their immensely layered and emotive new sound.

Wye Oak will be on tour throughout the spring beginning 3 March and including stops at both Coachella and SXSW. Other highlights include a sold out show at The Lexington in London, the M4M Music Festival in Zurich and Webster Hall in New York City on 7 May. All confirmed dates are below with more to follow..

Fans can pre-order the album now via iTunes as well as through the City Slang webshop. Shriek will be available on both CD and LP, including a limited run on orange vinyl.

Dungeonesse Premiere Video for Nightlight

Dungeonesse, the project of Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes) and Jon Ehrens (White Life) have premiered their new video for Nightlight with Stereogum. In it, director Ariana Natale imagines a liminal space – a dream world full of magical jellyfish that bloom and glow while Nightlight pulses and trembles along. The video works like a one-way mirror into the ambiguous borderland between conciousness and unconciousness, between reminiscing and being haunted, that echoes the song lyrics Wasner sings, “…if I’m in the light, I believe it that I’m over it/ But when it’s late at night, I can feel it taking over and/ I’m not over it, I’m not, I’m not, I’m not.”

Of the video, Wasner says: “Nightlight is one of the most bittersweet songs on the record for me. It’s about the kind of heartbreak that finds you even once you think you’ve escaped it–the kind that keeps you up at night, agonizing over those little things you can’t forget.

“I had such a great time working with Ariana and her crew–envisioning the bleary-eyed, sleep-deprived fantasy world that exists in the space between waking and sleeping, where dreams and reality overlap and eventually become one.”

Dungeonesse’s self-titled debut album is out now on Secretly Canadian. The band has already garnered praise from a wide variety of outlets. From mainstream newspapers like USA Today and AM New York, to the visual art world with Art Info, to Pitchfork to The FADER and countless others, Dungeonesse have won hearts and minds with their catchy, compelling music.
