Chad VanGaalen Releases The Video For Single, Monster

After his performance at End of the Road Festival last weekend and headline show at London’s Oslo this coming Monday, you can now watch Chad VanGaalen’s animated directorial creation for Monster, the official video from Shrink Dust, his critically acclaimed fifth album.

The video is a suitably psychedelic affair featuring, of course, all sorts of monsters.

Chad VanGaalen’s previously announced European tour in support of Shrink Dust, kicked off this Sunday August 31 in North Dorset, UK at End of the Road Festival and ends on September 15 in Tilburg, NL at Incubate.

Shrink Dust has earned Chad VanGaalen some of the best reviews of his career with praise from the likes of Magnet, Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, BLURT, FILTER, NME, Loud & Quiet, Exclaim, Relix, NOW, Music OMH and more. At radio, Shrink Dust spent three weeks in top 10 on the CMJ albums chart.

Recently,  Chad VanGaalen visited KEXP for a wonderful & hilarious performance in support of Shrink Dust. You can also listen to Chad VanGaalen: A Beginners Guide, a collection of his songs from over the years, thoughtfully prepared by the employees of Sub Pop, label mates and friends.

Chad VanGaalen’s Shrink Dust is now available on CD/LP /DL in the U.S. and Europe via Sub Pop. The album is also available in Canada via Flemish Eye. Shrink Dust, featuring the songs Where Are You? and Monster was produced by VanGaalen at his Yoko Eno home studio in Calgary, Alberta.

Cousins To Release New Album, Halls Of Wickwire

Cousins, the big and booming duo of Aaron Mangle and Leigh Dotey, are releasing their new album, Halls Of Wickwire, on May 13. It will be a co-release with Ba Da Bing and Hand Drawn Dracula.

After several years of skin shedding metamorphosis, near-endless north American touring, two full length albums and a string of limited edition releases on various formats and labels, they’ve grown up, they sound refreshed and unencumbered by the weight of the region or their own history. Produced by Graham Walsh (holy fuck, Metz, Hannah Georgas) Halls Of Wickwire is warm and fully blasted and it’s a recording that finally matches their powerful live shows.

The first song to be released from the album, Mess, is a perfect indication of the volume to come. A driving drumbeat builds to an explosive chorus while the guitar mops up the wreckage left behind.

You can catch Cousins live on the following dates:

* with Chad Vangaalen

May 14 :: Boston, MA :: TT The Bear’s Place *

May 15 :: Brooklyn, NY :: Bell House *

May 16 :: Philadelphia, PA :: Milkboy *

Chad VanGaalen Releases New Track, Monster

Chad VanGaalen has released his latest track, Monster, taken from his upcoming album, Shrink Dust, which will be released later this month.

Stereogum premiered the track yesterday saying, “It might seem strange that Calgary singer/songwriter Chad VanGaalen took inspiration from both the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius comic The Incal but Monster, his new single from the upcoming Shrink Dust, gives that a bit of perspective. VanGaalen lays out lines about his skin changing and his fingers falling off only to be replaced by talons as bustling guitar and group vocals give the whole song a camp fire glow. It’s a nice combination between the familiar and the alien”.

Chad VanGaalen – Sara

Canadian, Chad VanGaalen, has been an influence for our very own Florence & the Machine for many years but I bet hardly any of you have heard of him. Am I right?

Well now you have. Chad VanGaalen is a solo singer/songwriter with a beautiful voice and even more beautiful lyrics.

Sara is off his soon to be released album, Diaper Island, which is out May 17. It’s a song about his partner and muse who manages to spark his creativity even in his toughest and most depressing times.

The lyrics are powerful and if you’re feeling emotional, they will definitely bring tears to your eyes. Here’s a snippet, “You’re golden beam breaking into the ocean. deep…You consume my mind with your silence. Oh Sara, I hear you calling me.”

His voice sounds exactly like the Guillemots lead singer, Fyfe Dangerfield, which is fantastic. It means it has that rawness to it which only enhances the nakedness and truth behind this song.

The acoustic guitar with a backdrop of subtle electronic effects gives this song a really open feel. His lyrics expose his feelings and the music helps to bring forward this sincerity.

It’s a lovely, romantic song which is definitely worth a listen, especially for those of you who appreciate meaningful lyrics.
