Introducing…Darktown Jubilee

Darktown Jubilee are David Boardman (vocals/guitars), Stuart Day (bass), John Cosgrove (drums), Gary O’Brien (keyboards) and Al Roberts (guitars). With their influences stretching from The Doors to The Temper Trap, Darktown Jubilee produce a sound that’s familiar.

Their new single can now be heard here. Stay is a classic and triumphant indie rock song. Vocally, Boardman reminds me of higher pitched Kelly Jones (Stereophonics) mixed with Grant Nicholas (Feeder). The guitar riff during the verses is reminiscent to the Stereophonics’ 2005 hit, Dakota. Darktown Jubilee feel like a modern day version of the Stereophonics, their style is very similar to that of the Welsh band.

Stay is taken from the forthcoming album, The World, The Flesh & The Devil which is set for release on March 11. It’s the follow up to 2012’s Breakdown and has seen the band gain a lot of attention. Stay made such an impact that world renowned engineer, Cenzo Townsend mixed the single for them. Cenzo Townsend has worked with The Vaccines, Florence + the Machine, The Machine, U2, The Editors and The Maccabees.

Singer/guitarist David Boardman from the band comments:

“Stay is the most emotionally direct song on the record and has always connected with audiences so it became an obvious choice when we were considering singles. It was a dream to get Cenzo to remix it for us. He has mixed some of the greatest records of the last 10 years and I think brought out the best in the track, bringing to it an increased energy and dynamic range.

“For the video, however, we were keen to show another, more playful, humorous side to the band whilst still remaining true to the essence of the song. The initial idea was to have the lead character enter a surreal, dreamlike scenario in which a procession of weird and wonderful characters were singing the song in karaoke style.

“Finding the venue (a karaoke bar in Manchester’s Chinatown) was key to the look of the finished film and once actor Emma Atkins agreed to play the lead role, it all began to take shape. It was a cool video to make which included nods to some favourite films and formative influences.”

You can catch Darktown Jubilee live at the following dates:

City Reign – Making Plans

Mancunian indie rockers City Reign have announced the release of their first single Making Plans. The song is taken from their forthcoming debut album Another Step.

Making Plans caught the attention of Steve Lamacq from BBC 6 Music who played the demo as soon as he heard it. He also finished his show on Monday night  with another track, Anchor also taken from the upcoming album.

City Reign are song-writing duo, Chris Bull and Mike Grice with Duncan Bolton on drums. The single follows taster tracks City Reign released as free downloads such as Ahead of Ideas and Retaliate. Ahead of Ideas shot the band onto the UK touring scene and led to Clash Magazine asking them to open their inaugural issue launch gig in Manchester.

The band eventually teamed up with Mancunian producer, Sam Jones to record and re-work the album. He took them to Sacred Trinity Church in Salford after choosing the church for its rich natural reverb. He hoped this would help bring depth to the band’s classic guitar sound.

City Reign are clearly inspired by Placebo. This can be heard strongly in their first single, Making Plans. The vocals are very Molko-esque while the music is very typical of the English indie style.

The single, Making Plans and debut album, Another Step are both set for release on February 25. The video was shot in Manchester’s legendary Night and Day venue where the band played their first gig.

You can catch City Reign live at the following dates in February:

Thursday 14th – Edinburgh – Bannermans
Friday 15th – Glasgow – Buff Club
Wednesday 20th – Cardiff – Buffalo Bar
Thursday 21st – Bristol – Golden Lion
Friday 22nd – London – The Garage
Saturday 23rd – Manchester – The Castle
