Whilk & Misky Release Video For Clap Your Hands And Announce Their Second Single, Darkhands

Welcome to the hazy world of London’s Nima and Charlie AKA Whilk & Misky.

Nima likes cold industrial techno whilst Charlie likes angst infused soul which places them in a mystical highway somewhere between Chet Faker and Flume.

From a chance meeting at a restaurant where Charlie was working to posting demos online to finally causing a budding war between a gaggle of labels – the duo have just glazed the finishing touches over the debut EP, The First Sip.

Following their Next Hype kudos from Zane Lowe for their debut single Clap Your Hands and the release of its sublime Miami-backlit video last week, Whilk & Miksy have now revealed the next track from the EP – the stripped back deep-electronica slab that is Darklands. The track first surfaced online last year as a demo and now the final edit can be heard for the first time.

Introducing…Shag Rock

Smack bang off Bourne Street Brisvegas, the five members of Shag Rock are probably sinking some beers as we speak. But these true blue ‘strayan mates are also set to burst onto the scene as a shagaholic indie-rock sensation, with their latest track Cold Hands.

From the beach to the band room, Shag Rock convert their surfy energy into their music. With a chorus smoother than bundy rum, their new single Cold Hands puts you into a dream state. It’s definitely a slightly more serious turn from the jovial, bubbly tones of their previous EP but a turn for the better.

A thick intensifying guitar build up, a soul-touching piano riff, all augmenting to the chorus that won’t leave your head for weeks. And that’s just after the first listen. Be prepared for the voice of Jeff Buckley and Bernard Fanning’s babies. A hauntingly beautiful song, with a sparse yet perfect fragility that you can only understand once it has hit your ears.

Recorded with QUT as part of the Independent Music Project 2014 and produced by Don Lee and associates, Cold Hands was then mastered by Don Bartley.

Written by lead singer Alex Wilson and guitarist Jacob Reed, it started empty with just an acoustic guitar but with inspiration from their yearning to let every setting sun take them to a place free from daily restrictions, it soon boomed into a thunderous band song.

Brought together in high school through their thirst for good times and a collective buzz off making sweet tunes, these five Brissy boys have life pretty sorted out. Known for their laid back aura yet scintillating stage steeze Shag Rock seem to be capturing everyone’s attention. Jumping off amps, tables, drums. They don’t stand still for a second on stage and this energy is only going to amplify in the future.

Cold Hands is out tomorrow (29 September 2014).

Kalen & The Sky Thieves Release New Album, Bluebird

NYC-based moody rock quartet Kalen & The Sky Thieves advance the release of their debut LP, Bluebird, on Ropeadope Records.

Melding elements of electronic, funk and dance, Kalen draws inspiration from the likes of Radiohead, Massive Attack and Pink Floyd. Produced and recorded by the band and John Davis at The Bunker Studio, Bluebird runs the gamut from modern alternative, to old time rock n roll, even hinting at elements of a funk influence. The album was recorded live in the studio to embrace the raw power of people making music together with real instruments in real time. Bluebird serves to fulfill Kalen’s dream of making a proper rock album while also showcasing her considerable vocal talents.

Originally, Kalen was producing music as a solo project but in 2012 in attempt to zestfully promote her Fallen From The Sun EP, she was joined by drummer Wayan Zoey (Russ Kaplan +7), bassist Jay Giacomazzo (I, Revere) and guitarist Will Hanza (Loopgrass), who are now known as The Sky Thieves. Bluebird is a mix of songs from Kalen’s solo pursuits re-imagined for a live band as well as a series of newer arrangements conceived and developed in a collective manner by the quartet. Since Kalen joined forces with The Sky Thieves, the band has packed venues throughout the Northeast, including the Mercury Lounge in NYC, Fete Lounge in Providence, RI, The Empire Ballroom in Portland, ME and DC9 in Washington, DC. In the process, the band was nominated for Artist of The Year through Brooklyn’s RAW chapter.

Kalen’s solo release Fallen From The Sun saw critical acclaim and was in heavy rotation on triple A and college radio. With the addition of The Sky Thieves in 2012 and a hearty touring schedule to promote the album, the band was featured in the CMJ Top 30 throughout the country. Publications have raved about the band’s live performance, stating, “Kalen is fantastic. She owns the stage, gets the crowd rocking and has unparalleled energy (New York Pudding, 2011)” and “With her soulful, dark voice, Kalen knows how to keep the audience entranced and wanting more (Indiemunity, 2013).” Fallen From The Sun gave a taste of what Kalen & The Sky Thieves have to offer and with the stage presence to back that up, this band has all the credentials to be a huge hit. Stay tuned for the release of Bluebird this coming October 14.

Click HERE to pre-order and stream the unreleased album on Bandcamp before it’s available everywhere else on October 1.
