Son Little Tours With Kelis

Son Little sees the world differently from the rest of us. As a child of hip-hop, Son Little – the neo-soul-blues-hip-hop persona of former Roots and RJD2 collaborator Aaron Livingston – takes on reality as a series of samples, genetic building blocks that connect in strange and miraculous ways. Hence the “neo-blues meets the ghost of Bob Marley trapped inside a tabla machine” tag Okayplayer gave his first single Cross My Heart or his own description of second single Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches as a “Wu-Tang sea shanty with the Beatles on background vocals.” This is no flip, off-the-cuff soundbite; Son Little borrowed pieces of lyrics from a traditional sea shanty and reset them inside the timeless work song groove of Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches, grafting the imagery of the lawless seas onto modern streets.

Lyrical cut-ups a la Burroughs and Bowie, musical cut-ups deeply ingrained in his hip-hop schooling, all emerge as a deep soul ache in the new school of the Weeknd and Miguel. Now, for the first time, Son Little takes his music to the streets in his first national tour dates, seven of them in support of R&B maverick Kelis. Little is already commanding attention in the press and blog world, on the strength of just the two aforementioned single releases in 2014. For an America whose cultural bloodlines trail Son Little like the hellhound of the old blues songs, this tour will be a first chance to see an artist who is already one of the breakout stories of the year.

The Newcastle-based Iceni are true purveyors of disco-infused power pop. They’re a female trio who run almost entirely on good vibrations, keyboard riffs and cups of tea. Having already supported Jamie Cullum, Maximo Park, The Stranglers and Aswad, Lindsay, Liz and Caroline have decided to finally release their much anticipated debut single Drive.

Iceni single artwork

Drive begins with a lead piano part and main vocal line which are both subtly supported by an intimate and continuous backing harmony. Together with the stripped down drum beat it creates a lenient and intimate yet powerful intro.

The overall production generates a sonic journey travelling between Kate Bush, Haim, Vampire Weekend and Fleetwood Mac and focuses on songwriting, harmonies, energy and authenticity. The arrangement is very meticulously constructed and keeps on building from start to finish rapidly pacing from part to part.

Filled with tantalising hooks, melodic surprises and unexpected plot twists, Drive creates an eccentric yet appealing treat for every listener and will be available for sale and download 2 June.

Joyce Manor Announce Headline Tour

Los Angeles pop-punk outfit Joyce Manor has announced a US headlining tour in support of the new album Never Hungover Again which is out on July 22 on Epitaph Records. Joyce Manor will play FYF Fest in LA as well as supporting select dates with Brand New. Their new single Catalina Fight Song is available on iTunes now.

Joyce Manor was conceived in the back of a car over a cheap bottle of booze in the Disneyland parking lot – the kind of beginning that California dreams are really made of. In 2011, Joyce Manor’s self-titled debut was impactful with its standout anthem Constant Headache. Lauded favourite, Of All Things I Will Soon Grow Tired, was released in 2012 on Asian Man. Joyce Manor has earned cult status within the punk community and Never Hungover Again is the album that will satisfy those who have waited. It’s the speed and sense of melody of the Descendents, the bittersweet lyricism of Jawbreaker and the heart-on-sleeve honesty of blue-album Weezer. It’s the rare sort of album that redefines a young band.

Never Hungover Again was recorded at the end of 2013 with producer Joe Reinhardt at the Lair in Hollywood and was mixed by Tony Hoffer (Supergrass, Belle and Sebastian, M83, and Phoenix). Never Hungover Again captures a complex feeling in 10 precise songs that is part sadness, part loneliness, part anger even when things seem to be going okay. With some of the saddest lyrics you’d ever shout along to from the front row, Never Hungover Again is heartbroken pop-punk perfection.

You can catch Joyce Manor live on the following dates:
5-Jul   Toronto, ON     Toronto Urban Root Festival

Roll The Tanks Embarks On Concert Marathon

Los Angeles-based band Roll The Tanks will celebrate their debut album Broke Til Midnight by playing four shows on release day at various Floyd’s 99 Barbershops on May 27. Roll The Tanks will kick things off 11 AM in the Floyd’s Venice location and will wrap-up festivities by 6:30 PM in Burbank.

Fans and curious patrons alike are invited to catch the extravaganza because all shows are free. At each location, 99 raffle tickets will be given away and one winner will be selected for a special grand prize. In addition to prizes, there will be infectious live performances from Roll The Tanks as they play cuts off the album. Those taking photos at the event for Instagram are encouraged to tag the photos using the hashtag #Floyds99Takeover. Selected photos will be chosen and re-posted after the event. Broke Til Midnight is streaming online now in its entirety.

Broke Til Midnight hits right in the gut upon first listen. A record that leaves no room for uncertainty in 13-tracks that beg listeners to hit repeat and enjoy the ride. It helps that band members Danny Carney (vocals/guitar), Aaron Stuart (guitar/ vocals), Mike Wakeman (bass/vocals) and Joe Sirois (drums) are fans of enduring song smiths Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, The Pixies and The Clash from where they draw inspiration to carry on the torch. “We’re going to make records because that’s what we want to do – make records,” says Carney. “No clunkers, no fillers. Records where you almost die making them.” Though the band didn’t die while making the album, they did have to wait until 12 AM for when their paychecks cleared at the bank in order to pay their bar tabs; hence the album title Broke Til Midnight.

An unpretentious, classic rock inspired “band’s band,” Roll The Tanks are primed and ready to carry the torch for energetic, solid rock music. And as their name implies, they are prepared to flatten all obstacles. And if the Floyd’s marathon doesn’t break them, Roll The Tanks will play a record release show the following night, on May 28 at El Cid in Los Angeles.

Floyd’s 99, the Original Rock ‘N Roll Barbershop for Men and Women®, mixes old-school customer service with the appeal of an experienced, talented staff in a fun, high-energy environment. The brainchild of brothers Paul, Rob and Bill O’Brien, the first Floyd’s 99 shop opened in downtown Denver in 2001. It has since become the fastest-growing group of barbershops in the United States with 73 locations in 12 states, and nine shops in various stages of development. From humble beginnings, the brand’s success is built on introducing clients to the novel idea of getting a great haircut at a reasonable price in a unique atmosphere. Floyd’s 99 has been actively involved in every community where a shop has opened since the earliest days. With personal connections to Type 1 Diabetes, Floyd’s 99 is a strong supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the largest charitable funder of T1D research. For more information, visit

Floyd’s Barbershop Schedule:
11:00 AM – Venice, CA (609 Lincoln Blvd.)
01:00 PM – Santa Monica, CA (11431 Santa Monica Blvd.)
04:00 PM – North Hollywood, CA (1555 N. Cahuenga Blvd.)
06:00 PM – Burbank, CA (1040 N. Hollywood Way)

Mountain Bird Releases New Single, The Visitor

Mountain Bird are an aspiring dream-pop act hailing all the way from Stockholm, Sweden. Having recently being signed to Universal Music Group, they are about to release their highly anticipated new single called The Visitor. The track is written, arranged and produced by their lead man, Adam Öhman, and is performed by his band mates: Anders Erlandsson Öberg, Victor Jonsson, Dennis Fyhr and Sam Ekberg.

The Visitor is a unique sonic experience that combines the atmospheric ambience with post-rock introspection to excellence. Resembling the creativity of Cold War Kids, the minimalistic approach of The xx and the grandeur of M83 all mixed into one, Mountain Bird know how to arrange their music impeccably from start to finish.

The Visitor is the lead single taken out of the upcoming new EP called Cosmos II. It gives way to a collection of mellifluous tracks, pulsating rhythms and insightful lyrics. The overall production positions Mountain Bird as one of the potential and non-traditional leading breakout artists of 2014. One of their most distinguishing features is unearthing the new, brave and oft-ignored sounds together with the cozy familiarity which everyone can relate to. The melodic guitar riffs are beautifully layered with the delicate nature of the lead vocals and together they create a soulful coating on top of their already haunting sound.

Cosmos II EP consists of five tracks which are a direct representation of Mountain Bird’s quasi-autobiographical songwriting. The songs do not always sound triumphant yet still feel very re-assuring with the words acting as salves for the listeners’ own hang-ups and reservations.

The Visitor will be available for sale and download everywhere from today with the Cosmos II EP to be released shortly after on the 11 June via Universal Music Group.

Ash Grunwald Releases Self-Titled Compilation Album

Australian blues artist Ash Grunwald released his self-titled album on US iTunes this week. The new album is a collection of live and studio tracks that fans from around the world would consider a ‘best of.’ The album, as well as Ash’s 24-date summer tour as direct support for lifelong friend Xavier Rudd that kicks off next week in Salt Lake City, marks his official US debut. After releasing a total of ten albums and touring throughout Australia, Japan, Europe and Canada for over a decade, Ash Grunwald is excited to bring his crowd frenzied shows and blistering guitar playing to the US.

“Many of the songs on this album where recorded in a very non-traditional way,” says Ash. “I’ve really enjoyed pushing the blues into new directions with unusual blends of production and beats.” Many of the beats he’s used over the past five years have been provided by hip hop producers. “I’d often use a hip hop loop and then add elements of ‘junk percussion’ like hammers, spanners, bits of metal and chains.”

Ash’s new album includes single Longtime which is now available as a free MP3 download. The song’s official music video features Ash, Xavier Rudd and friends at home in Australia’s Byron Bay enjoying their second passion in life: surfing.
