With their self-titled debut album released across Europe last week through City Slang and a tour starting soon, Caribou percussionist Brad Weber and his band, Pick a Piper have shared a full stream of their record at Soundcloud.
The album is made up of eight very different songs all with one thing in common: each is built upon the foundation of its own ingenious rhythm structure with musical layers meticulously applied up until the vocals which are added right at the very end, if at all.
Pick A Piper are aiming for an eclectic album that manages to occupy that rare space of music that works as well on record as it does on the dance floor (looking at you Caribou).
To give the album the perfect finish, Brad enlisted many of his friends as guest singers on these recordings. Among others, he asked Andy Lloyd of Born Ruffians as well as members of the Ruby Suns and John Schmersal of Enon, Brainiac and Caribou. Brad sent them demos, allowing space for a very important and often underestimated element of the musical process, the vocals. He couldn’t be sure exactly what the respective collaborators would contribute to the corresponding ideas but that was the concept, and thus the resulting album sounds even less like a classic producer album, and more like a soundtrack to a movie – it has different topics but a common thread throughout.
Though Pick A Piper will be keen to avoid too many Caribou comparisons, they do share a penchant for psychedelic tripping imagery both in their videos and band promos. It’s safe to say that fans of Caribou will find a lot to love about Pick A Piper.
Pick A Piper’s debut album is full of complexly layered yet catchy songs that display a very keen sense of rhythm, song writing and musical finesse. There’s attention to detail but with the bigger picture in mind.
