The Kent-based band Mourning Birds take heavy influence from Nirvana, Queens Of The Stone Age and the Detroit garage rock ‘n’ roll scene. They are releasing their first single at the end of the year via The Preservation Society record label. Mourning Birds were also recently featured on BBC Introducing.
Their sneak preview track The Last Thing (I Need) has huge energy and despite the full on sound, there is structure and interest within that sound and in both the vocals and lyrics. It’s an intelligent track. The song blasts a ‘get away from me’ angry rejection theme, “The last thing I need is the one who adores me. The last thing I need/Is you’. But the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you.
Their songs show a quirkiness that they have which makes them stand out from other bands in this genre. They have character, a splash of Arctic Monkeys and street brashness. Mourning Birds could well be one to watch next year.
You can check them out on Facebook for gigs and further developments.
